Designed during the global COVID-19 pandemic, this residence was conceived as a response to the challenges of lockdown living, particularly for those in rented apartments. The sense of confinement, mental stress, and trauma experienced during that time informed the design approach, creating a sanctuary that emphasizes openness, nature, and well-being. The client, an industrialist and one of the owners of ABA Group, envisioned a home that would foster a deeper connection to nature and offer a refuge in case another lockdown ever occurred.
The residence is structured to provide both a luxurious family dwelling and a means of return on investment through rented units. Each floor houses a single, spacious unit, ensuring privacy and comfort for tenants, while the top of the building features a duplex for the owner. The duplex opens up to south-facing terraces, allowing the warmth of the winter sun to permeate the living spaces, while ensuring ample ventilation throughout the year via the natural flow of the south wind.
At the heart of the design is a green courtyard, with a stairway running alongside it, leading to the upper floor of the duplex. This touch of nature provides a moment of calm and serenity for all inhabitants. The roof and floor of the duplex are graced with gardens, blending the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. These green spaces, combined with the cosmic connection to the open sky, help to ground the inhabitants while offering a sense of expansiveness.
The building is aligned along a south-facing axis, on the end of a long road that leads to a field, reinforcing the connection to the surrounding environment. This axis allows for living spaces and balconies to be aligned along the southern façade, facilitating the free flow of wind throughout each home, ensuring ample natural ventilation and creating a healthier, more breathable living space.
This thoughtful design not only addresses the immediate concerns of pandemic living but also offers a timeless residence where nature and openness are integral to the experience of home.
